how do you paint nursery wooden letters?
Artists! Looking for a way to paint wooden letters for my baby’s nursery so they look very store bought. What type of paint? what type of brush? do you need sealer? I love the rustic look… Help!
I am a craft professional who has done a lot of wood letter projects (both simple and fancy).
Here are some basic steps for what I recommend for your project:
-sanding and sealing (with all purpose sealer or wood sealer)wood letter (if it is unfinished)
-You can do a base coat to get a more solid color. Most common is white gesso since it is inexpensive, helps to further even out surface, and comes in large quanitities. If you don’t want to use gesso, white acrylic paint (or any preferred basic) is okay.
-Use acrylic paint for desired color. I recommend Delta Ceramcoat paint since it is a non-toxic waterbased paint. If you want it to look rustic, Delta also has mediums to help give you different paint finishes, like Crackle or Aged looks.
-Let dry before adding varnish. It’s up to you what type of varnish you want to use. Spray on varnish won’t leave streaks, but paint on varnish turns out much thicker. It’s up to you.
-You can use a foam brush or an all purpose flat synthetic or natural hair brush. The foam brush is the cheaper way to go, but tends to suck up paint much faster than painting brushes.
Tip: If you like the rustic look, here’s an easy aging technique: Paint the base color one color, then the top color a contrasting color. Lightly sand to show some of the base color. Dust off and varnish when satisfied with results.
You can also decoupage pictures or clipart, stamp, stencil, glue on flowers… the possibilities are endless! Have fun!
